Upgrading Our Piano Restoration Process With a New CNC Keytop Jig

Brigham Larson Pianos

We’re always looking for ways to improve the quality and precision of our restoration work here at Brigham Larson Pianos. In this video, I walk you through one of our latest innovations—a custom-built piano CNC keytop jig that’s now a key part of our process for restoring heirloom pianos.

My son Ben, who’s an incredibly talented engineer, designed and built this jig entirely in-house. It’s engineered to hold keys perfectly in place while our CNC machine planes them down to exact specs. Then, without moving them out of alignment, the jig flips and locks into a second fixture that holds everything together during glue-up. That level of precision just isn’t possible with hand tools alone—and that’s exactly why we’ve implemented this CNC setup.

This jig dramatically improves both the speed and the accuracy of the keytop replacement process. And when you’re restoring pianos that are over a hundred years old—or that hold deep sentimental value for a family—those details really matter.

National Piano Restoration, One Key at a Time

We don’t just serve clients here in Utah. Thanks to our national piano moving and restoration service, we regularly arrange pickup and delivery routes across the country. If you have a family heirloom piano that needs rebuilding, refinishing, or even just keytop replacement, give us a call. We’ll help arrange for your piano to be safely transported to our piano shop, where our team will restore it with the same level of care and precision you see in this CNC keytop jig process.

Restoration is not a one-size-fits-all job. Every piano has its own unique story, and our job is to preserve that story while bringing the instrument back to life—mechanically, structurally, and cosmetically. Whether it's replacing action parts, restoring ivory or plastic keytops with CNC precision, or refinishing the case to look like new, we handle it all right here in our dedicated piano shop.

Why Tools Like This Matter

This piano CNC keytop jig is just one example of how we’re blending traditional craftsmanship with modern tools to raise the standard of what restoration should look like. We don’t cut corners—our goal is to do the job right, and tools like this help us get there more efficiently and more accurately.

If you're thinking about restoring a piano—whether it's a concert grand, a family upright, or a rare antique—feel free to reach out. We'll walk you through your options, and if needed, get your piano picked up and brought to us from anywhere in the U.S.

Thanks for watching, and stay tuned for more behind-the-scenes looks at the work we do here at Brigham Larson Pianos.
