When I take on a Lester piano restoration, the first question I’m asking is not about cosmetics—it’s about structure. Is the soundboard solid? Is the plate stable? Does the piano justify a full rebuild, especially if it’s a family heirloom?

This particular project is a 1916 Lester upright piano restoration, and it checked the right boxes. It’s structurally sound, and more importantly, it has real sentimental value. That combination is exactly when a full restoration makes sense.

The Custom Batman Yellow Plate: Where Craftsmanship Meets Personalization

Now, this is where this project took a turn that I really enjoyed.

In most of our restorations, we use a signature plate finish—a gold/bronze tone with a very fine metal flake. It gives the plate depth and a subtle shimmer without being over the top.

But this customer had a specific vision.

He had restored a classic car with a hidden feature: a “Batman yellow” undercarriage—something no one sees unless he chooses to show it. That idea translated perfectly to the piano.

So for this Lester piano restoration, we finished the plate in that same custom yellow. From the outside, the piano looks traditional. But inside, it’s completely personalized.
