North Carolina Heirloom 1890 Emerson Upright Piano Rebuild & Refinishing
Brigham Larson PianosShare
We recently completed a full restoration on this 1890 Emerson upright piano, and it turned out beautifully.
Projects like this are one of the reasons I love piano restoration. There's something deeply satisfying about taking an instrument that has endured more than a century of use and returning it to a condition where it can continue making music for another generation (Heirloom Stories & Restorations).
Why the 1890s Were Such an Important Era
The 1890s occupy a fascinating place in piano history.
By this point, most of the major engineering challenges had already been solved. The cast iron plate was fully developed, string scaling had matured, and manufacturers had a solid understanding of action design and structural integrity. In many ways, the pianos built during this period established patterns that continued well into the twentieth century.
That's one reason I enjoy restoring pianos from this era. They often provide the best of both worlds: mature engineering combined with the opportunity for a dramatic restoration transformation.

The Restoration Process
This Emerson underwent a comprehensive restoration.
The cabinet was refinished and received a carefully recreated replica decal that matches the original appearance of the instrument. The brass pedals are original to the piano and date back to 1890. One of the wonderful characteristics of metal components is that they can often be completely renewed. After restoration, these pedals look nearly identical to the day they were installed.
Inside the piano, we removed and refinished the plate. Most people never see the plate inside an upright piano, but we do. A properly restored plate adds both beauty and craftsmanship to the finished instrument.
The piano was completely restrung with new strings, restoring both tuning stability and tonal quality.
Structural Repairs
As with many pianos of this age, we encountered some structural challenges.
Part of the pinblock exhibited surface cracking. Fortunately, the damage did not extend deeply into the structure. After disassembly, we saturated the affected area with penetrating CA glue. This type of adhesive wicks deep into the wood fibers, dramatically strengthening the material.
Another section required more extensive intervention. We routed out the damaged area and fitted new maple into the pinblock structure. Once completed, the repair became an integral part of the piano's framework.

Restoring the Soundboard
The soundboard is the heart of the piano's tone.
In this restoration, we refinished the soundboard and installed shims where necessary. Before fitting the shims, the board was placed under tension. The shims were then installed tightly, and when the clamps were removed, the board retained a healthy degree of crown and tension.
This process helps restore some of the soundboard's original acoustic properties and contributes to a stronger, more responsive tone.

The Result
One of the highlights of this Emerson is its bass response. The piano has a warm, rich sound that belies its age.
People sometimes ask whether severe problems such as cracked pinblocks, damaged bridges, or soundboard issues mean a piano is beyond saving. In my experience, the answer is usually no. Most problems can be addressed with the right techniques, materials, and craftsmanship.
This Emerson is a perfect example.
What began as a tired 134-year-old upright piano is now a beautiful musical instrument ready for decades of continued service.
Every restoration presents unique challenges, but one thing remains remarkably consistent: when the work is done properly, these pianos almost always exceed expectations.

Why Heirloom Piano Restoration Matters
