Restoring a 1977 Mason & Hamlin Console: Blending Heirloom Craftsmanship with Modern Silencer System

Restoring a 1977 Mason & Hamlin Console: Blending Heirloom Craftsmanship with Modern Silencer System

Brigham Larson Pianos

There’s something special about restoring a piano that has been part of a family’s story for decades. This 1977 Mason & Hamlin 43" console came to us as a cherished California heirloom—well-loved, well-played, and ready for its next chapter.

Our goal was simple: preserve its legacy while elevating its performance, beauty, and functionality for modern living.

Restoration & Refinishing

Over time, even the finest pianos begin to show wear. Our restoration process addressed both the internal performance and the external beauty of the instrument.

Cabinet Refinishing

The original wood finish had aged and dulled over the decades. We carefully restored and refinished the cabinet to satin black, enhancing the piano’s character and integrity. The result is rich, elegant, and true to the spirit of the original design.

Action Regulation & Performance

A piano is more than its appearance. We carefully regulated and refined the action to ensure consistent touch, responsiveness, and dynamic control. The result is a console that feels alive under the fingers—balanced, expressive, and rewarding to play.

Adding Silent Play Technology

One of the most exciting aspects of this project was the installation of a modern Silent Play system.

This system allows the pianist to:

  • Play traditionally with full acoustic sound
  • Engage silent mode and practice through headphones
  • Adjust volume levels for late-night or shared-space playing

The beauty of this upgrade is that it enhances functionality without compromising the integrity of the piano. The acoustic experience remains pure and authentic. When silent mode is engaged, the player gains privacy and flexibility—perfect for today’s homes.

Honoring the Past, Preparing for the Future

Restoration isn’t about making an old piano look new. It’s about honoring what it was built to be—and ensuring it can continue serving families for generations.

This 1977 Mason & Hamlin console now stands as both a preserved heirloom and a modern instrument. It carries its history proudly, while offering the convenience today’s musicians appreciate.

That balance—between tradition and innovation—is at the heart of what we do.

If you have a family piano that holds memories but needs new life, we’d love to help you explore what’s possible. Sometimes the most meaningful instruments are the ones already in your home.
