Collection: McPhail Pianos

The A.M. McPhail Piano Company, established in 1837 by Andrew McPhail in Boston, Massachusetts, quickly became one of the prominent piano manufacturers in America. Known for their exceptional craftsmanship and innovative designs, McPhail pianos gained a reputation for high-quality construction and superior sound. The company was incorporated in 1891, and by the 1860s, McPhail was producing pianos in Boston, including several high-grade and elaborate models that were particularly popular during the Civil War era.

McPhail pianos are celebrated for their rich tonal quality and durability. The company produced a variety of piano styles, including square grand pianos, uprights, and baby grands. McPhail was an early innovator in the piano industry, constantly refining his designs to achieve a premium sound. This focus on quality and innovation helped the company to survive the Great Depression without being forced into bankruptcy or merging with other manufacturers, a rare achievement at the time.

In the 1920s, McPhail relocated their production facilities within Boston, continuing to build their reputation for excellence. However, by the late 1920s, the company merged with Kohler & Campbell, which continued producing pianos under the McPhail name until the 1950s. Today, McPhail pianos are appreciated not only for their exceptional craftsmanship and sound but also as historical artifacts that reflect a significant era in American piano manufacturing.
