Collection: Lyon & Healy Pianos

Established in 1864 in Chicago by George W. Lyon and Patrick J. Healy, Lyon & Healy initially began as a retailer of sheet music and musical instruments. They started manufacturing their own pianos and organs around 1876 after a devastating factory fire in 1870. The company faced another significant challenge with the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, which destroyed much of the city, including their establishment. Fortunately, Lyon & Healy had sufficient insurance to rebuild, allowing them to resume operations quickly and expand their business.

Known for their exceptional craftsmanship, Lyon & Healy pianos, including their renowned "Cottage Upright," gained a strong reputation for quality and durability. In addition to pianos, Lyon & Healy became the most successful builder of concert harps globally, starting in 1889. Their pianos, particularly baby grands and uprights, were celebrated for their powerful and clear tones. The company also built pianos under the "Washburn" brand name as an affordable alternative.

During the Great Depression, Lyon & Healy's piano division was absorbed by Everett Piano Company, which continued producing pianos under the Lyon & Healy name until the 1970s. Despite their discontinuation, Lyon & Healy pianos are still appreciated today for their historical significance and superior craftsmanship, making them valuable pieces for restoration and collection.
