Gold plated hinges, detailing, and pedals from a piano

Metal Hardware Replating Shop Tour

Brigham Larson Pianos

Hello everyone. Recently, we shared a video tour of our in-house piano plating restoration process. This video serves as a perfect introduction to the intricate world of metal hardware replating—a process we've mastered to bring new life to the pianos we restore. For nearly 30 years, we outsourced this delicate work, but now, thanks to my chemist son, we've taken our restoration quality to a whole new level by bringing this process in-house.

The Intricate Process of Piano Plating Restoration

Piano plating restoration involves rejuvenating the metal hardware of pianos by applying a new metal finish. This process not only enhances the visual appeal of the piano but also protects the hardware from corrosion and wear. Here’s a detailed look at the replating process:

1. Ultrasonic Cleaning: We start by thoroughly cleaning the metal components using ultrasonic cleaners. These cleaners use high-frequency sound waves to remove dirt, grime, and old plating material from the metal surfaces, ensuring they are spotless and ready for the next steps.

2. Chemical Baths:

The cleaned componentes are then immersed in chemical baths to prepare the metal surfaces for plating by etching and conditioning them. We have to keep these baths at precise temperatures and voltages in order to achieve the best results.

3. Plating Process: We apply a new metal layer to the components. This process involves immersing the components in a plating solution and using an electric current to deposit a thin layer of metal onto the surface. Our in-house setup allows us to customize the type of metal finish—be it nickel, brass, or gold—according to the specific requirements of each restoration project.

4. Quality Control: After plating, the components undergo a rigorous quality control process. We inspect each piece to ensure the finish is uniform, smooth, and free from imperfections. Any necessary touch-ups are made to guarantee the highest quality.

5. Final Assembly: Once the plating is complete, the restored components are carefully reassembled onto the piano. The result is a beautifully restored instrument with hardware that looks and functions like new!

Piano plating restoration is not just about aesthetics; it’s about preserving the instrument’s integrity and extending its life.
